The Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) would like to inform Subject Persons of recent developments issued by the European Anti‑Money Laundering Authority (AMLA) regarding the forthcoming framework for AMLA’s direct supervision of selected financial institutions and groups within the European Union.
On 12 May 2026, AMLA published a reporting package designed to support national supervisory authorities in identifying provisionally eligible obliged entities that may fall under AMLA’s direct supervisory remit as from 2028. This initiative marks a significant milestone ahead of AMLA’s first selection cycle, scheduled for 2027.
Key elements highlighted by AMLA include:
- Cross‑border footprint: Financial institutions or groups operating in six or more EU Member States may be considered eligible for selection.
- Risk‑based selection: The identification process will rely on a harmonised EU‑wide risk assessment methodology, developed under the new AML/CFT legislative package.
- Role of national supervisors: Competent authorities will be responsible for collecting and validating the required information from entities under their supervision.
- Standardised reporting tools: AMLA has issued a reporting template and an interpretative note to ensure consistent data collection across Member States.
- Upcoming webinar: AMLA will host a public webinar on 10 June 2026 (10:00–12:00 CEST) to provide a practical walkthrough of the reporting template. The session is open to all interested participants, with capacity for up to 3,000 attendees, and no registration is required. Access will be provided directly via the Webinar link published by AMLA.
- Questions via dedicated Survey: Participants may submit questions in advance through a dedicated survey by 5 June 2026, and a full recording will be made available following the session.
Timeline
- 15 August 2026 – Deadline for national supervisors to complete the data collection exercise.
- End of September 2026 – Publication of the provisional list of eligible entities.
