Head of Strategy, Policy and Quality Assurance
Alexander Mangion has been part of the FIAU’s Legal Affairs Section for over seven years and is currently responsible for managing the Section. The FIAU’s Legal Affairs Section is mainly responsible for the drafting of AML/CFT laws and regulations as well as the provision of guidance and training to subject persons. The section also handles the international affairs of the FIAU.
In fulfilment of this role Alexander attends a number of EU and international meetings. He has also taken an active role as a technical expert in a number of EU Council working party meetings wherein the adoption of the Fourth Anti-Money Laundering Directive was discussed and was actively involved in the working group which under the Maltese Presidency of the Council of the EU spearheaded the process for the adoption of the Fifth Anti-Money Laundering Directive. Alexander formed part of the working group that coordinated Malta’s Fifth Round Evaluation by MONEYVAL and is also a certified MONEYVAL evaluator.
Alexander graduated Doctor of Laws from the University of Malta in 2009. Prior to joining the FIAU in 2012 he was engaged as a legal officer within a local professional firm.
