EU “Maintenance and Alignment” Package of Restrictive Measures against Russia & Update of SMB Guidance Notes

The FIAU would like to bring to your attention the fact that on the 21st of July 2022, the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted the “maintenance and alignment package” in response to Russia’s continuing war of aggression against Ukraine. These measures “are intended to tighten existing economic sanctions targeting Russia, perfect their implementation and strengthen their effectiveness.” The Council Decision (CFSP) 2022/1272 of 21 July 2022 can be found here .

Consequently, the SMB has updated the following Guidance Note in order to reflect the Council Decision:

The FIAU would also like to bring to your attention the updated version of the following Guidance Note issued by the SMB:

The FIAU, would like to stress to subject persons the importance of keeping abreast of any developments related to their obligations, including being up to date with the latest sanctions and restrictive measures imposed by the EU against Russia, and to ensure adherence to them.

Furthermore, the FIAU would like to remind subject persons of its own Guidance Note on the interplay between anti-money laundering/funding of terrorism obligations and the restrictive measures applicable in the context of the current situation in Ukraine.  The Guidance Note is accessible through the FIAU’s own website.
