Mark Said

Head - Cash Restriction

Mark Said joined the FIAU in 2021 and presently leads the Cash Restriction Section (CRS). He is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Cash Restriction Legislation which came into force in March 2021.

The section’s role is to monitor and ensure compliance with the Use of Cash (Restriction) Regulations, to effectively fulfil one of the functions of the FIAU. Through these regulations, the FIAU aims at reducing the illegal use of cash in Malta by raising awareness with respect to the Regulations whilst building the necessary controls to detect and sanction cases of illegal use of cash.

Mark obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Suffolk and is a Public Accounting and Finance graduate from the University of Malta. Prior to joining the FIAU, Mark was employed for 13 years with the Internal Audit and Investigations Department (IAID) where he gained extensive experience in the conducting of financial investigations and other Anti-Fraud matters. Initially, Mark was assigned duties related to EU Funds Audits, in 2013 he was promoted to Programme Manager within the Financial Investigations Directorate. In 2017, Mark was appointed to Director (Financial Investigations), with the responsibility of heading the conducting of financial investigations and to manage Malta’s Anti-Fraud Coordinating Services (AFCOS) executing the role of Malta’s liaison with OLAF.
