EUROPOL has announced the publication of its annual Internet Organised Crime Threat Assessment (IOCTA) 2024. It features EUROPOL’s evaluation of developing threats and trends in the cybercrime landscape, and how this has changed during the past 12 months.

Relevant crime trends which this year’s report focuses on include cybercrime attacks, child sexual exploitation and online fraud. These are considered to be the most threatening manifestations of cybercrime which took place in the EU in 2023. EUROPOL also notes that the cybercriminal landscape includes both sole actors but also criminal networks with wide-ranging expertise and capabilities. Moreover, while some cybercriminals pursuing the EU were based in the EU itself, others operated from outside the EU and hid their illicit activities and funds in third countries. This publication also provides insight into future expectations, which includes AI-assisted cybercrime amongst other cybercrime developments.
